The first time you mentioned it, I didn't like the idea, but I've given it more thought, and that resource system could work. Yes, you'll find that ships never look like they need more weapons. It's how weaponsare placed that matters; see this for a beautiful example of not needing many weapons, and this whole thread for amazing weapon placement. Try applying the principles to your ships, and see if you can't think of some...

As usual, the majority of responses are overly harsh and not very helpful. Repetition is not as bad as it could be since you lined up pieces very well. I would say, for this particular design, make it smaller. Use the same pieces, same pattern, just make it smaller so you don't have so much to fill...
