If you can go for a Shellcore-style tournament, go for it. Sounds like alot of recordkeeping and battle recording. I'm up for it.
As for the mothership, i'm personally against chainship projects due to the general differences in builder styles, and stuff going pearshaped with arms, etc...

Add another sprite underneath the engine/exhaust sprite. Parent your thruster to that sprite, depth it...
