Okay, so it looks like you should stick to small ships until you've looked around the forums and absorbed a bit of how other people go about building large ships. Edit: Just noticed you said it was your first ship ever. As such you probably know that it's fairly bad, in which case you shouldn't have...

Before we make any real judgments on your potential you should probably go for something fairly large (for a newbie ship anyway); at least 100 pieces. Grmbl, people can make ships just fine without needing to make 100, 200, 300, 1000 piece big ships. A creator can be a good creator making only stoc...

To be honest I don't particularly like the shielding. To me it looks like a rollcage or a wire handle, which is made worse by the dotted lines.

Section 16 and Aegis spam is ugly and asymmetric. Never have the little rectangle things sticking out of Section 10 visible. The insides only seem to be a mild jumble of parts; you may want to construct your hull in stages instead of throwing things on there. It doesn't work so well; I'd know. The c...

My favorite so far is the Calanoid. The oversized demeter and the completely black sections look off though.

Those section 22's on the wing strut look pretty terrible. Same with the main hull; you may want to replace some of them with 21's (I think? I'm not at my computer right now, it might be 23's I'm thinking of). You're also going to have to chop off large sections of the stern to build the hull around...

I'm pretty much stuck unless I have some sort of epiphany (or someone else has it for me).

Should I scrap this for now and just move on to a new ship? (Assuming I'm not addicted to Fallout 3 for the next few weeks)

I did that "splicing" thing you were talking about; does this look better?: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/corporal_esche/kiruna31.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/corporal_esche/kiruna3p.png The engines are parented directly to the energy-beam things. I'm obviously going...

Is there any way you could make a reactor core that is not octagonal and not made up of four 26's? That's probably where a good portion of your problems originate, plus I seriously doubt you are the first to make an octagonal reactor core out of four 26's. Hell, I though of doing it for like 5 secon...

As you can see from the last page, I r bad at making hulls with areas more than a few sections wide ): really, all you would have to do is splice on a scaled down version of those already existing arms to the outsides of the ship, and it would improve the looks a lot. Which already existing arms? S...

It's due to his graphics settings as I don't see any artifacts.
